A new university ratings website incorporating students’ experiences has been published.
Education must be regarded at all times as a fundamental human right and the pathway to equality of opportunity for all and not only the few, if we are to live at ease with ourselves in a just democracy. Education and training for all is an enriching experience and the empowerment of all people in a rapidly changing world. ESOL Skills for Life is the launching-pad for those who seek learning, knowledge, understanding, integration, skills and attitudes needed for self-fulfilment and development as pro-active and responsible individuals.
The new standards for adult literacy and numeracy offer the opportunity to develop the ability to read, write and speak in English as well as to use mathematics at a level necessary to respond, function and progress at work and in society in general. Robin Blyth, ESOL Tutor
At I.A.P. everyone is deeply committed to provide students with the essential tools to become better communicators and more confident individuals. Confident communicators reach new heights in all aspects of life be it professional or social. From the mother who desperately struggles to understand and help her child with schoolwork or simply grasp the gist of a teacher’s report, to the more studious learner progressing into further education or the ‘breadwinner’ aspiring a better job and a better life. My goal as an IAG Officer is to enable every student to realise his or her potential and meet their respective expectations. Nneka Onwubuke

I learn a lot from working as an ESOL Teacher. On a day to day basis I talk with students from all over the world and discover many interesting aspects of their cultures and in some cases about the political problems in their countries. One of the strengths of our centre is that it’s an embodiment of multicultural London, where a diverse range of individuals can co-exist in a happy, supportive atmosphere.
We’re strict and the majority of students appreciate that. I’ve worked for other establishments where the arrival of students appeared to be an irritation to the wage-earning process of the staff. At such places students drifted in whenever they liked, with impunity, and often didn’t come in at all so that the small nucleus of regular attendees had their lessons interrupted by an endless series of strangers, who were constantly playing catch-up. Many of our students are emerging from bewildering periods of their lives and are trying to re-establish themselves in a strange new environment so we try our best to provide them with an oasis of stability.
Students completing courses at IAP come away not only with an increased knowledge of English but also will have learnt about British history, institutions and culture. We include many such topics in our daily classes and also take each class for an educational visit, once a term, to places like The National Portrait Gallery or The British Museum.
